| 内容記述 | This article would argue that learning and teaching English as a school subject in Japan should be designed and practiced to foster the following three educational values and develop students characters，which has been neglected due to the influence of the examination system: (1) to foster an awareness of the “foreignness” of the English language whose conceptual framework is distinguished from the Japanese one; (2) to foster a sense of “uniqueness” about the Japanese language which makes them explore and reflect on the nature of their mother tongue; (3) to foster an awareness of the “communicative function” of language which both languages have in common as a “human language.” To illustrate how to achieve these three goals，two classes at the university level are presented as examples which are designed to provide many opportunities to expose students to English and create a learning community in which they use English frequently as they have meaningful encounters and dialogue with others. | |||||
