| 内容記述 | In Nepal, enforcing the traditional practice of separating or confining menstruating women has been an offence punishable by a fine or imprisonment or both since August 2017. Nevertheless, and as Heckert et al. (2023) have demonstrated, the practice remains deeply rooted in Nepalese society. This study analyzes data drawn from interviews in order to investigate how the convergence of Nepal’s emphasis on nuclear families and the current trend towards women entering the workplace is affecting female compliance with traditional norms regulating female behavior during menstruation. The interviewees were selected from women in their 20s to 40s who could feasibly act as role models to adolescent females. Their responses were analyzed with a view to, firstly, discerning trends in accordance with their ages, family structures, and dwellings (in terms of whether they could be considered rural or urban), and, secondly, investigating four hypotheses that the practice of traditional norms vis-à-vis menstruation is fading and being superseded by practices based on personal preference. Post-analysis, it was found that changes in norms regarding menstruation have been brought about by (1) changes in family structure, increased employment opportunities for women, and changes in living environments due to urbanization, and (2) the benign influence of key influential figures in interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, these factors were found to be supplanting the factors that were formerly pivotal in enforcing compliance, namely institutional and social coercion and a fear of engaging in sacrilegious behavior. In conclusion, this study speculates that the practice of menstrual norms will eventually become a matter of personal choice and suggests that this outcome will in part be derived from wider recognition of the fact that the large body of Hindu scriptures known as the Vedas does not contain any basis for treating menstruating women as impure. | |||||
