| 内容記述 | This paper examines the contemporary practice of Pativrataa, a traditional Nepalese form of husband worship. Pativrataa is used to consolidate gender norms that manifest themselves through other practices such as the everyday wearing of ornaments indicating married status and ritual practices at the annual Haritalika Teej festival. Previous studies have pointed out that, under the influence of consumer culture and globalization, the character of the Teej festival embodying Pativrataa is changing from a traditional form of celebration to an entertainment-oriented event. Interviews and focusgroup discussions conducted in urban and rural areas in the course of this study revealed the following: (1) contemporary working women in urban areas have fewer opportunities to wear ornaments indicating married status due to workplace dress codes and the popularization of Western fashion; (2) global media has influenced Teej attire in both urban and rural areas; (3) in rural areas, traditional home-cooked meals are eaten at Dal khane on the day before fasting but, in urban areas, banquet meals at party venues have replaced traditional home-cooked meals, and (4) the transformation of Teej into a form of entertainment in urban areas is reflective of changes in social relations between women due to increased economic stability (income) and urbanization. | |||||
