Students enrolled in this course aim to be certified as social and mental health professionals with more than seventy percent successfully passing the yearly national examination for certification. Recently, the numbers of foreign professionals working in Japanese social welfare fields that require Japanese language proficiency continue to increase from countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Furthermore, this influx makes it even more necessary for Japanese professionals in these fields to obtain higher levels of English proficiency for better communication with foreigners living and working in Japan.\n The purpose of this paper is to report on the current progress of this program along with examining its pedagogical approach and effectiveness in using the methodology of ESP ( English for Specific Purposes)in its implementation.
